ISS 310 course before study abroad

International and Off Campus Programs (IOP) is pleased to announce that we have developed a new one-credit course to help students prepare to travel or study abroad. This new course, ISS 310: Preparing for Abroad, will be taught for the first time in the second half of Fall Semester 2025 starting on October 21, 2025.

Students who plan to study abroad during J Term 2026 or Spring Semester 2026 are invited to consider registering for ISS 310: Preparing for Abroad (one credit hour) during Fall Semester. Three sections of ISS 310 are available for the second seven-week portion of Fall Semester 2025, running from October 21 through December 5, 2025.
  • Section 1: MW 8:30-9:30 am, Old Main 329
  • Section 2: MW 2:15-3:15 pm, Olin 208
  • Section 3: TTH 2:15-3:15 pm, Olin 305
Dr. Steve Duke, Director of IOP, will be the instructor for ISS 310. He looks forward to working with Augie students in the process of integrating your study abroad experiences into your personal and professional life and your development as a student. Three key learning goals for the course are to:
  1. Increase your intercultural competence and cross-cultural skills gained through studying away;
  2. Facilitate intellectual curiosity and critical thinking as you prepare for your study abroad experiences and how you might integrate those experiences into your personal life and academic experiences;
  3. Enhance your communication competence as you prepare to interact appropriately and effectively with people in your study abroad location.
Students and faculty are invited to email Dr. Duke with any questions they may have. Dr. Duke has taught a similar course at a different institution and has found that students really enjoy the chance to spend more time preparing to make their study abroad experience as meaningful and impactful as possible.
